Chennai, located along the Bay of Bengal, is the capital of the Indian state Tamil Nadu. It's home to many historical sites such as the ancient Fort St. George, St. Mary’s, a 17th-century Anglican church, sacred temples and a handful of beaches.
Fort St George was built in 1644 by the British to serve as a “home away from home” for the officials of the East India Company. It’s considered to be the first establishment by the British in India. It was used as the East India Company’s trading outpost and then for the Indian Army. The fort is also famous for its military architecture.
For more history, visit St. Mary's Church, one of the oldest surviving churches built by the British and the oldest Anglican Church in India. The church is even known as the “Westminster Abbey of the East.” Established in 1680, the church still stands strong and has the oldest tombstones in its graveyard.
Marina Beach is one of the main beaches and a popular tourist spot. The exciting part about the beach is that it goes on for 13 km! In fact, it’s considered to be the second largest beach in the world where it starts from the St. George Fort to neighbouring Mahabalipuram. If you end up in Mahabalipuram, be sure to check out the crocodile parks and farms that are home to three of India’s endangered species.
